MCIE Summit Break Out Sessions
There will be two hours of breakout sessions. When you register, you will be asked to select your time slot for each breakout. Some presentations are two hours long.

Lean Manufacturing – (1 hr) 9:30 a.m.
Ron Hurst – Holds a degrees in leadership and organizational development, a certificate in Evidence Based Coaching, a Masters in Business Administration, and a Metallurgical Engineering bachelor’s degree to round out a broad experience base of education. He has been trained in Lean Six Sigma and holds a black belt in this discipline. This matches up well with his 23 years of manufacturing experience in both Canada and the United States. His relaxed and dynamic presentation will include problem solving and continuous improvement as a part of lean manufacturing.
1 hour in length – 1 session at 9:30

Sales Growth Through Export – for general managers, sales and marketing managers 1 hr, 1 session at 9:30 a.m.
Elizabeth Glynn, of CMTC, will lead this session.  She contributed to the standing-room-only session on getting started with export in the 2013 Manufacturers’ Summit.  This session will highlight several successful, innovative Inland Empire firms who have grown through export.  Roy Paulson, of Paulson Manufacturing (Temecula) will narrate his journey into export.  Roy is a member of the President’s Export Council. He will speak about the opportunities available to Southern California firms due to reforms in export controls, as well as from a proposed Pacific Rim pact that will somewhat parallel with certain nations in the Pacific Rim, what NAFTA has done for trade with Mexico and Canada. Chris Clarida, Vice-President of Operations for Chino-based firm Diamond Wipes, will speak about how they are achieving their export growth targets.   1 hour in length – 1 session at 9:30 a.m.

Foreign Trade Zone in the Inland Empire with The Port of Long Beach – for general managers, sales and marketing managers 1 hr, 1 session at 10:30 a.m.
This session will build on some concepts from the earlier session on Sales Growth Through Export at 9:30.
The Port of Long Beach operates Foreign Trade Zone 50 (FTZ-50). Gina Barro , Business Development Manager of Trade Development, will describe how qualifying businesses in FTZ-50 can reduce costs on customs duties. Rex Reid, Director of Trade Compliance, for Firth Rixson will describe British manufacturing firm Firth Rixson, with its successful forging operations at Schlosser Forge in Rancho Cucamonga and Forged Metals in Fontana. He will explain how they’ve used the import and export functions of being in a Foreign Trade Zone to save tariffs and increase business. Rex is based in Dallas, Texas. Diana Lam-Brandt of the Port of Long Beach will help to answer questions that may arise.
1 hour in length – 1 session at 10:30 a.m.

Building the Workforce Pipeline – Industry Highlights:  9:30 a.m. This session will repeat at 10:30 a.m., Room 107, 1 hour – Case studies from manufacturers will be presented that demonstrate how business and industry can impact their bottom line through education and customized training.  Presentations will be delivered by Leggett & Platt, Sterno CandleLamp, MetCel LLC, California Steel Industries, Inc., and others who will provide their perspectives on how partnering with Community Colleges and Universities has improved quality, productivity, and impacted their bottom line.  Come learn how businesses are relying on education to:

  • provide trained employees to meet their workforce demands,
  • reduce production and overall costs through ‘lean’ and other training
  • pre-screen candidates for specific ‘hard to find’ manufacturing positions
  • secure training funds on behalf of business and industry,
  • reduce turnover through subsidized employee training and so much more.

Businesses will discuss best practices in the workplace and how current partnerships with educational institutions have helped to support industry ROI.  Hosted by Chaffey College, Harvey Mudd, Norco College, Riverside Community College, San Bernardino Community College District, and UC Riverside Bournes College of Engineering

Changing the Workplace to Attract the Next Generation – for HR, marketing managers and public sector administrators 1 hr, at 9:30 a.m.
Betsy Lamb, Vice-president of Organizational Planning and Development, CalPortland Company, will share her multifaceted approach to “succession planning” for the workforce.  CalPortland is a firm with 147 plants in the western United States, including major cement manufacturing plants and building materials manufacturing and supply plants. She will described the firm’s use of energy efficiency efforts to reposition itself in the minds of the public. The firm has greatly expanded its use of college interns, and how that has helped to raise the awareness of college students in a half-dozen schools to career opportunity at CalPortland. And Betsy will describe how the firm is working to incorporate the “smart” technology devices (think iPads and iPhones) that the young people seem to find so necessary. Jon Burgess, Vice-President and Senior Consultant of RedFusion Media, Inc., District Governor for the American Federation of Advertising will provide marketing strategies that are indicated by the newly emerging generation.

Innovation for Growth and Increased Sales – for owners, department managers, sales and marketing managers 
1 hr, 10:30 a.m.
Suggested to follow Changing the Workplace
Learn how to change old ideas into new ideas and develop those into the future ideas. Create, Communicate, and Commercialize will be the buzzwords. This session will involve audience problem solving, teams, and presentations.  Dr. Virginia Green, of the California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC), will lead this session guaranteed to stimulate your “right brain.” 1 hr, at 10:30 a.m.

Environmental Compliance Issues Explored – for plant or resource engineers and plant managers 2 hrs, at 9:30 a.m.
Covers a broad range of compliance issues including: liquid solid and air quality issues, permitting, disposal, green requirements, legal and regulatory issues, penalties for non-compliance, and reporting. Presented by Bruce Armbruster,  JE Compliance Services, Inc., 2 hours in length, 1 session starting at 9:30 a.m. 

Resource and Energy Innovation – for plant or resource engineers and plant managers  1 hr at 9:30 a.m.
Interaction with the “Hundred Motor Study” of Advanced Energy financed by federal and state funds, and challenges to AB32, presented by from: Stephen Coppinger, Director of Engineering Services, CalPortland Company. Bob Kniss, Southern California Edison on collaborative efforts with the cement industry, and Dr. Sadrul Ula on the University of California Riverside’s Winston Chung Global Energy Center and soon-to-be built electric motor lab. 1 hour in length, but may continue into the second hour – 9:30 a.m.
