Students Learn About Opportunities in the Inland Empire Manufacturing Industry
The third annual National Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) on October 3, 2014, drew the attention of students, parents, educators, civic leaders, and businesspeople for a sneak peek into the technologically sophisticated world of manufacturing. Manufacturers across the Inland Empire celebrated National Manufacturing Day by showcasing the rewarding career opportunities available in modern manufacturing. In an effort to inspire students to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering, manufacturers opened their doors to the local community and hosted events across the Inland Empire.
The Chino Airport hosted a National Manufacturing Appreciation Event and invited manufacturers to exhibit their products in an airplane hangar. Local students were shown how private jets are designed and manufactured.
Other exhibitors at the hangar gave attendees an inside look into the reality of modern manufacturing, shedding light on common public misperceptions about the industry as a dark, dangerous environment fit for low skilled workers. (An info-graphic that tells more about these misperceptions is available on the MFG Day website.) An industrial motor rewinding manufacturer, Brithinee Electric of Colton, answered questions for interested students, many who returned to their booth several times to ask more questions about Brithinee’s industrial control panels.
California Steel Industries from Fontana engaged and educated students at the hangar with over 200 participating in their Steelworker Quiz. Entries with all questions answered correctly were placed in a drawing for four AMC movie tickets.
Since 2012, participation from communities across the nation has fostered the continuous growth in the number of MFG Day supporters, including the Nation’s President. On October 2nd President Obama declared the support of his Administration to the growth of the industry and officially proclaimed October 3rd, 2014 as MFG Day.
Many individuals, leaders, organizations and other entities in both the private and public sectors have recognized the need for collaborative efforts among communities to inspire young people to pursue manufacturing careers. “America’s manufacturers have created jobs at the fastest pace in decades, adding more than 700,000 new jobs since February 2010,” stated Obama in the official Proclamation released by the office of the Press Secretary for the White House.
In the Inland Empire that needed inspiration has come from the continued efforts of local manufacturers, education and employment training entities, civic leaders, citizens and parents of potential future manufacturing professionals. Organizations such as the Manufacturers Council of the Inland Empire, the Workforce Investment Boards of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the San Bernardino Employment Training Agency and partnerships of local colleges continue their efforts to create a unified voice that strengthens the industry.
